Knox/Trinity Fall Worship – November 8, 2020

Remembrance Sunday

Prayer of Approach

God, our Creator and Redeemer,
Eternal God, your people praise your name:
We tell of your glorious deeds.

Infinite God, your people marvel at your majesty:
We tell of your grace and power.

Everlasting God, your people give thanks for your saving love:
We tell of the wonders you have done. And so, we worship you, our God of justice and peace and pray for your reign among us. In Jesus name. Amen

Prayer of Adoration and Confession

God of yesterday, today and forever,

You are the God of every generation, and your love endures forever. You have protected us during difficult times, for your compassion is everlasting. You have shown us the path to truth and life in Jesus Christ our Lord. We give you thanks, O God, that you are always near. In this time of worship, we declare our love and loyalty to you, and offer you our service in prayer, in praise, and in practice, this day and every day, our one true God, whom we know and love as Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit.

Sheltering God, we need your protection and redemption in these complex days. Yet, so often we fail to serve you in sincerity and faithfulness. Today, we come before you to confess our shortcomings, confident in your mercy.

We confess that we are often short-sighted, caring more about ourselves today than about future generations. In our selfishness, we have harmed the planet and perpetuated division among nations and neighbours. We ignore the needs of those around us, especially when caring for them would require us to change our habits or our hearts. Forgive us, O God, and show us ways to transform our lives to reflect our commitment to Christ more fully

Assurance of Pardon

Christ died so that we might live. Through his undying love, we have been forgiven. Rejoice in the forgiveness God offers us. Be at peace with God and yourself, and make peace with your neighbours, for Christ’s sake. Amen.

On Remembrance Day, we mark the costly offering of lives given for the sake of others. What we offer today is small in comparison, but with God’s blessing, our gifts and our act of remembering them can also make a difference for the sake of others—in Christ’s name.

Please observe a minute of silence to remember all who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them    “ For The Fallen” by Laurence Binyon

Scripture:

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died. For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Benediction (Richard of Chichester 13th century)

Thanks be to Thee, O Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which Thou hast given us; for all the pains and insults which Thou hast borne for us. O most merciful Redeemer, friend and brother, may we know Thee more clearly, love Thee more dearly, and follow Thee more nearly; for Thine own sake. AMEN.
