Red Dress Day, Monday, May 5 … the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S). This day acts as a powerful reminder of the thousands of Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit individuals in Canada who have experienced race and gender-based violence. We wear red to honour mothers, daughters, sisters, cousins, aunts, and diversly gendered relatives who have been lost or impacted in this crisis. We stand with families and communities who have been affected by the ongoing violence.
The origin of Red Dress Day began in 2010 as part of Métis artist Jamie Black’s REDress Project, an art installation displayed across the University of Winnipeg campus. The original project involved hanging 100 red dresses to symbolize this crisis and call attention to the missing and murdered members of Indigenous communities across the country.
WALK in solidarity with Surrounded by Cedar Child and Family Services Society, local organizations, Songhees Nation, and Xʷsepsəm/Esquimalt Nation, on their annual Our Women Are Sacred Walk. Please see the event page for full details.
WEAR red or hang a red dress to show your support for the families and communities of MMIWG2S and Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit and transgender people.
LEARN by reading Highway of Tears: A True Story of Racism, Indifference and the Pursuit of Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls by Jessica McDiarmid, a searing and revelatory account of the Indigenous women and girls who have gone missing or been found murdered along an isolated stretch of Highway 16 in northwestern British Columbia. (This book is especially important to me, as I grew up along this highway, and am part of a northern community still haunted by these crimes.)
DONATE to initiatives that support Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit and transgender4 people in our community: Sacred Indigenous group at Peers Victoria, Victoria Women’s Transition House Society, Bridges for Women, or Victoria Native Friendship Centre.

Sunday, May 4, 2025 – Mission Moment
Through gifts to Presbyterians Sharing, the Presbyterian Church in Canada supports many vital outreach ministries across Canada. One such ministry is Rivière des Prairies, a mission of the Presbytery of Montreal that plays a significant role in outreach within the city’s east end. This mission focuses on connecting with immigrants where there is a growing presence of new Canadians, mainly from Cameroon. Rivière des Prairies celebrates multilingualism in its church services and children’s programming, creating an open and welcoming space for newcomers to Canada. Through these efforts, the mission fosters a strong sense of community and supports individuals on their shared faith journey.
