Music Team

At Knox, there is something for everyone!

Our music ministry is an integral part of worship in two ways. Sunday morning hymns vary from contemporary to traditional – a chance to explore some new songs or relax in the comfort of familiar melodies and words. It is all offered for the glory of God, as we lift our voices in harmony.

Our music leaders

Carolyn Hoekstra – Piano and organ – first (communion) and third (and fifth) Sunday of each month.

Steve Sturgess and A Balm In Gilead Band – Steve, pictured with guitar, leads A Balm In Gilead Band on the second and fourth Sunday each month at services and at concerts during the year.

For many, contemporary means ‘praise’ music; rock music with Christian lyrics played in a style typically heard on the radio. Often these songs speak from the personal experience of the writer and not from scripture. This, however, is not what we felt suited our congregation. We wanted something still traditional but more contemporary.

The group takes the more than 800 songs in The Presbyterian Book of Praise (1997) and arranges them in contemporary styles. This approach retains the substance of the traditional hymns but gives them a modern flair. Played on acoustic instruments like flute, sax, guitar, upright bass and jazz drums, the songs are presented in popular styles like bossa nova, swing, folk etc.

Group regulars are Steve Sturgess – guitar and vocals, Ryan Tandy – bass, Corrine Painter – trumpet and vocals, and Michael Clement – drums.
