| “Presbyterians Sharing is the national church fund that supports mission and ministry in Canada and around the world.“
In 2014, General Assembly approved a new formula for determining recommended allocations from congregations for Presbyterians Sharing. Congregations are requested to allocate 10% of the amount of a congregation’s dollar base. The dollar base is determined from the annual Stats Report and reflects the amount a congregation spends on its own purposes (not including mission givings.) “Allocations are a guideline for the congregation to know what is a fair amount for them to contribute to The Presbyterian Church in Canada’s mission and ministry work.” Congregations decide, at their annual meetings, what allocations they will accept, and submit that amount to the presbytery. Some congregations give more than the recommended allocation and this generosity is appreciated. Other congregations give less than the allocation, or even not at all. We all understand financial restraints, but this allocation should be viewed as tithing to the national church, and every effort should be made to meet the allocation. It’s all a matter of stewardship. As congregations, we work to carry out God’s mission in the world. Giving to the national church is part of that mission. “The principle of proportional giving – whether a tithe or some other percent of our income – is a biblical principle. It applies not only to individuals, but also to communities of faith. Congregations that have a concern beyond their own survival and their own programs, however important and necessary, will likely find that their own ministries grow as they also reach out beyond themselves.” What are Presbyterians Sharing funds used for?
