Improving food security for drought-affected households in Umerkot district

February, 2025 to January 2028 serving 4,374 people in 600 households with a budget of $341,000 in Year 1

Unprecedented changes in the climate have killed livestock and drastically reduced production of major cash crops like rice, maize, sugarcane, cotton, pulses, and fruit. In turn, the production of winter crops (e.g., wheat) has been reduced by flooding.

Project participants will be provided with training on Climate Smart agriculture practices; supporting tree-planting campaigns; providing inputs for income generating activities; training on kitchen gardens, livestock management and value-added products; veterinary services and troughs for animals; and nutrition, health and hygiene training.

Emergency assistance for households affected by extreme flooding

February to May, 2025 serving 3,380 people in 520 households with a budget of $220,000

Pakistan ranks among the top 10 most vulnerable countries to disasters like floods, glacial lake outburst floods, and droughts. Sindh Province, one of the agricultural backbone areas of Pakistan, had been affected been affected by flooding on an ongoing basis, the most devastating, 2022 floods only two years ago. In 2024, record rainfall and extreme heatwaves caused further flooding, prolonging recovery efforts from the previous disaster.

The project will provide three cash transfers of CAD$ 103 per household (up to CAD$ 309 per household) over two months for participants.

Responding to flood-related impacts in Sindh province

March, 2023 – September 2023 serving 20,150 people in 3,100 flood-affected households with a budget of $1,057,220.

Mirpukhas is one of the severely affected districts. This project aims to increase immediate consumption of food and reduce food insecurity by providing 3 monthly mobile cash transfers of approximately $100 CAD per household to 3,100 flood -affected households (approximately 20,150 people).

Agriculture and Livelihoods, Food Assistance in Pakistan (HERD)

January 2022 to December 2023 serving 23,000 people in 1,125 households with a budget of $386,867 in Year 2.

The project will provide in-kind food assistance for 6 months. It will also provide agricultural inputs, provide livestock, conduct training on climate-smart agriculture and livestock rearing, establish kitchen gardens, and support alternative livelihoods by supporting women artisans with training and improved access to markets.

Responding to high food insecurity in Umerkot

February to August, 2023 serving 23,319 people in 760 households with a budget of $600,000

Targeted vulnerable households will receive six monthly transfers of 60 kg of fortified wheat flour, 15 kg of rice, 7 kg of pulses, 6 litres of cooking oil, 4 kgs of sugar, 500 grams of tea leaves, and 800 grams of salt. A total of 273.6 mt of fortified wheat flour, 68.4 mt of rice, 31.9 mt of pulses, 27,400 litres of cooking oil, 18.2 mt of sugar, 1.8 mt of tea leaves, and 3.6 mt of salt will provided over the entire project.
