Caring for Creation

Christians around the world are invited to give particular attention to praying and caring for God’s creation as part of the global Season of Creation, observed from September 1 to October 4 every year.
“The Season of Creation is a time to renew our relationship with our Creator and all creation through celebration, conversion, and commitment together. During the Season of Creation, we join our sisters and brothers in the ecumenical family in prayer and action for our common home.

The World Council of Churches was instrumental in making the special time a season, extending the celebration from 1 September until 4 October. The season starts 1 September, the Day of Prayer for Creation, and ends 4 October, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology beloved by many Christian denominations. Throughout the month-long celebration, the world’s 2.2 billion Christians come together to care for our common home.”

The theme for the 2024 season was “To hope and act with Creation”. In these times of extreme climate change, we have hope and the expectation for a better future.

A key event during this season was the Global Day of Action for a Fossil Fuel Treaty on September 21. The Season of Creation encouraged the Christian family to act together by engaging with the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty (FFNPT). FFNPT is an initiative to help catalyze the phase-out of fossil fuels while ensuring a just global transition for workers, communities, and countries.

Another helpful resource for your congregation to explore this fall is the EarthShot Prize, an initiative founded by Prince William. 2025 is the 5th year of a ten-year initiative.

The Earthshot Prize finds and grows the solutions that will repair our planet. The Earthshot Prize searches the globe for game-changing innovations that will help us repair our planet, awarding the very best five solutions each year with £1 million to scale their work.

Each year’s winners are announced in November. These are excellent examples of “hoping and acting with Creation!”
