Elders

In the early Christian Church, the Elders were the church leaders who met, thought, prayed and reasoned together with the apostles. Today, through membership in Session, elders (known as the ‘ruling elders’) work closely with the Minister (known as the ‘teaching elder’) to guide and lead the congregation.

Areas of responsibility for the Session include:
• Supervision and oversight of the congregation
• Pastoral care
• Worship
• Christian Education
• Stewardship and Mission
• Representation with the Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly

Elders are elected to the Session by the congregation to serve a six-year term, and each Elder serves on at least one committee and is responsible for keeping in touch with a district of individuals and families. Everyone in the congregation is included in an elder’s district. Elders and members of the Pastoral Care Committee are encouraged to reach out by telephone or visits to others in the congregation who need some encouragement because of loneliness, illness or bereavement.

The congregation is encouraged to speak to the Minister and/or their elder about any question or concern that may arise.
