September 6th: Summer Musings - The Way and Why of Work for the Christian

Summer Musings  -    The Way and Why of Work for the Christian

More than 2,000 years ago a sculptor erected a statue in a Greek temple.  He had spent much time perfecting it.  When asked why he gave the same painstaking care to the back, which wouldn't be seen, as he did to the front, he replied. "That's the way I always work.  People may never see it, but I believe the gods do."

How much greater reason Christians have for doing their work conscientiously!  They labor not for applause nor merely the fulfillment of accomplishment, but they strive for the approval of their Creator and Redeemer, and for the blessing of humankind.
An executive secretary once said, "When I began to envision Jesus standing behind my boss, my work changed.  I had to do my very best!  Even the menial task of serving coffee became a joy, and my attitude changed from arrogance to respect."
May this be the way and the why of our work as Christians; whatever that work may be, from the kitchen to the Board room.
Remembering especially during and because of this COVID-19 time, those who have no work, those who are overworked, small businesses who have had to go 'under' and those on the brink of doing so if the virus continues, and also ALL those who have put themselves at risk; those front line workers from the grocery store to the hospital/ nursing home rooms who have stood alongside those entrusted to their care. We also  pray for the safety and well being of ALL students from preschool to those doing post graduate studies and educators, administrators and support staff as they return to school.
Together in the Work HE has entrusted to us,
Rev. Wayne
