Understanding the Need: Homelessness in Fredericton
Homelessness is a growing concern in our city. In 2023, the Fredericton Homeless Shelters provided refuge to 378 individuals, including 20 seniors (65+) and 37 young adults (18-24). Over 13,690 shelter beds were used throughout the year.
People experience homelessness for many reasons, including:
-
-
- Domestic violence and family breakdown
- Job loss and financial struggles
- Rising rent and loss of housing
- Discharge from hospitals or correctional facilities
- Physical and mental health challenges
- Addiction and unsafe living conditions
-
More than Shelter: A Path to Stability
The Fredericton Homeless Shelters provide three emergency shelters and three transitional houses, offering not only a safe place to stay but also support to help people rebuild their lives. Their Continuum of Care Model includes:
-
-
- Housing Support – In 2023, 99.6% of individuals remained in permanent housing with shelter support.
- Prevention & Diversion – 26% of individuals were successfully diverted from needing shelter through early intervention.
- Counselling & Essential Needs – Support with securing an income, obtaining ID, education, employment, and life skills.
-
The Crisis Continues in 2024
As of early 2024, 342 individuals have already sought shelter—45 more than at this time last year. The demand continues to rise, making community support more critical than ever.

PALM SUNDAY MISSION: SHARING THE WARMTH OF CHRIST’S LOVE
On Palm Sunday (April 13), the St. James Missions Team invites you to embody this same spirit of generosity by supporting our neighbours served by The Fredericton Homeless Shelters. As we enter the unpredictable spring season, we are collecting new or gently used spring clothing and essentials, including:
-
- Ponchos, rain jackets, spring jackets
- Hats, umbrellas
- Rubber boots, sneakers, T-shirts, sweatshirts
The Shelters have identified other spring items they need as well.
We ask that you wait until the week of April 6-12 or Palm Sunday worship (April 13) to bring your donations to St. James. We will deliver them to The Fredericton Homeless Shelters during Holy Week.
SOCK COLLECTION DRIVE (October 2024 – March 2025)
Let’s help our neighbours keep their feet warm, dry, safe and healthy
against winter and cold, wet weather.
St. James’ mission team has just concluded a winter campaign to raise socks for The Fredericton Homeless Shelters.
OUR GOAL: 400 pairs of socks by April
RESULTS: Thanks to your generosity, we have exceeded our goal of 400 pairs of socks, collecting 551 pairs of socks, 8 pairs of mittens/gloves, 8 hats, 11 pairs of slippers, 1 scarf and feminine hygiene products. Thank you! We received donations from within the congregation and the community. Although the sock drive has concluded, any additional donations will be dopped off at the Shelters.
