Church News and Service Information for June 1st, 2025

Dear Friends,

I am excited to launch a new sermon series titled “Developing a Faith That Works,” based on the Book of James. In my opinion, this book offers many practical insights into our faith journey in the New Testament, much like the Book of Proverbs does in the Old Testament. One well-known passage from James states: “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead” (James 2:26).

At first glance, this scripture may seem to contradict one of the most foundational statements of our faith–salvation by faith alone (Romans 3:28). However, as we explore this passage, we will see that James emphasizes that true faith is always accompanied by good works (Ephesians 2:10). These deeds are not additional requirements for justification but are instead the evidence and demonstration of our genuine faith in God.

Throughout our study of James, we will be encouraged to reflect on our attitudes and actions, growing in spiritual maturity and becoming more like Jesus Christ. In addition, since Proverbs contains 31 chapters, we may want to consider reflecting on one chapter every three days throughout the next three summer months, to gain wisdom for Christian living.

With this note, I warmly invite you to join us for our hybrid communion service at St. Andrew’s Fenelon Falls on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at 10:00 A.M. As mentioned earlier, we will begin the message: “How to Profit from Our Problems” (based on James 1:1-12). During the service, we will also watch a children’s video illustrating the Parable of the Two builders.

For those joining us online, please have your communion elements ready if you wish to participate.

Church News and Announcements for This Sunday:

Donations to the Salvation Army Food Bank will be collected this Sunday. Everyone’s ongoing support for our community is greatly appreciated.

Book Donation from the Late Edna Evans’ Family
Sherry, the daughter of the late Edna Evans–our kind neighbor and friend from the United Church–has donated her mother’s books to our congregation. These books will be available on the table at the back of the sanctuary for the next two Sundays. Please feel free to take any of them, free of charge, if you are interested. We thank Sherry for her generosity in sharing her mother’s collection with us.

The 2025 General Assembly will be held in person at McMaster University in Hamilton from June 1-5, 2025. Please keep the commissioners in your prayers as they “seek to discern and make decisions for the work, ministry and mission of our denomination this year and in the coming years.” Caleb will be attending the Assembly as a commissioner following the June 1st worship service.

Chapel Service at Extendicare Fenelon Court & Visitations
Caleb will lead a chapel service at Fenelon Court on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. Before or after the service, as well as on future designated dates, he would like to visit with residents. If you know someone who would appreciate a visit, please let him know so he can arrange these friendly visits.

June 22: Guest Speaker– Dan Schley (Note: Caleb will be leading worship at the Norwood congregation that day, as part of concluding his role as their Interim Moderator, which will officially end on June 30, 2025.)

Pastoral Visits & Home Communion
Caleb, along with his wife Soon Hwa and available elders, is planning to make pastoral visits during the summer months. Home communion will also be available upon request. If you or someone you know would benefit from a visit or this time of fellowship, please let Caleb or an elder know.

We hope you will be able to join us for this meaningful time of worship.

Blessings,

Caleb
