Service Info for March 12, 2023 & Church Membership

Dear Friends,

It is time to change our clocks again: “Spring forward, Fall back.” Even though we lose an hour of sleep, we will get more sunlight starting tomorrow! We can soon see each other’s sunny and smiley faces an hour earlier than standard gathering time in our worship service.

Once again, I want to send a welcoming invitation to those considering having a church membership with the newly formed St. Andrew’s Fenelon Falls. Please talk to one of the elders (Stan, Lloyd, Mark, Dan, Barb, Faye) and/or me about this joining process. One more time, I’ve attached the resources about why membership matters in the Presbyterian Church in Canada. As Christ’s church, we would be happy to see you become our church family!

For clarification, the former Glenarm and Fenelon Falls members have automatically become parts of St. Andrew’s Fenelon Falls.

With these notes, I invite you and your family to join us for a hybrid service at St. Andrew’s Fenelon Falls on the third Sunday in Lent, March 12, 2023, at 10:00 am. We will continue studying the series “Rebuilding our Broken Walls and Others” from the Book of Nehemiah. This worship service will also be broadcasted live. The Zoom link below will open at 9:45 am. Before the service, the announcement slides will be presented to the congregation at the sanctuary and on Zoom.

Upcoming Events & Services:
Wednesdays, March 22 – April 26, 2023 – Spring Bible Study “40 Days of Love”
Sunday, March 26: Rev. Jonathan Baird

“The people commended all who volunteered to live in Jerusalem. These are the provincial leaders who settled in Jerusalem (now some Israelites, priests, Levites, temple servants and descendants of Solomon’s servants lived in the towns of Judah, each on their own property in the various towns” (Nehemiah 11:2-3).

Blessings,

Caleb

Church Membership Info and Holy Communion Service for March 5, 2023

Dear Friends,

I want to begin with a warm and sincere invitation to those interested in becoming a member of the newly combined faith community called St. Andrew’s Fenelon Falls.

Becoming a member of [St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church]
Today when we think of membership, it often corresponds with having certain benefits, discounts or services. We have our shopping memberships, our gym memberships, etc. However, membership in a church is different as it expresses our commitment to serving God through the church. With that comes the ability to exercise certain rights and privileges within The Presbyterian Church in Canada.

Why should I become a member?
The Bible reveals to us that our God is a covenant-making God. Membership is a way of expressing our commitment to God and to the church, the people of God. When we become members, we confess faith in God and commit ourselves to a covenant with God and, at the same time, with each other.

What’s the difference between being a congregation member and an adherent?
They are very similar, and adherents are often as dedicated to the congregation’s ministry as members, sometimes even more so. However, members promise to live in a covenantal community with God and one another. There are also times in the congregation’s life when it does make a difference. When parents wish to have their child baptized, at least one parent should be a church member. Only a member can be ordained an elder or vote for an elder. Only members can sign a call for a minister (although adherents do have the opportunity to sign a concurrence to a call).

How can I become a member?
There are three ways to become a member: by Profession of Faith, Certificate of Transfer from another Church in which one was a member, or by Resolution of Session if a certificate of transfer is not possible. The above information is brief and may lead to more questions than answers. Suppose you have any questions about the Presbyterian Church or membership. In that case, Caleb will happily discuss these matters with you.

Note: The above information is taken from the former Glenarm church’s resource.

I believe the primary attribute of belonging to a church family is caring for one another. The Bible says, “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it” (1 Corinthians 12: 26). One of the things I am proud of in our congregation is that we, as a church, take care of one another. Our divine assembly looks like a family-oriented congregation. When we hear good news from our members, we share it and rejoice together. When we find that some of the members seem weak in one way or another, we encourage them and pray for them. St. Andrew’s Fenelon Falls is far from perfect, but it is full of loving people willing to serve the Lord and share our sorrows and joyful moments. This is one of the genuine meanings of becoming a member of God’s church.

With this introduction to church membership, I invite you and your family to join us for a hybrid holy communion service at St. Andrew’s Fenelon Falls on the second Sunday in Lent, March 5, 2023, at 10:00 am. Prepackaged sacred elements will be provided for those participating in an in-person gathering before you sit in the pew. Please prepare your communion materials if you plan to join us virtually.

Spring Bible Study: March 22 – April 26, 2023
Sunday, March 26: Rev. Jonathan Baird

“All these now join their fellow Israelites the nobles, and bind themselves with a curse and an oath to follow the Law of God given through Moses the servant of God and to obey carefully all the commands, regulations and decrees of the LORD our Lord.” (Nehemiah 10:29).

Blessings,

Caleb

“What is your number one priority in life? Your answer to that question reveals your dominant life value. Everyone has one, whether they realize it or not. It’s what we unconsciously base our decisions on.

Through this six-session, video-based Bible study, 40 Days of Love, pastor Rick Warren—author of the bestselling book The Purpose Driven Life—teaches you how to constantly focus on authentically loving God and loving others as your deepest desire and highest aspiration.

God tells us that our dominant life value is to love and be loved. Jesus once said that of all the commands in the Bible; two are most important: Love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself.

In this six-session study, Warren shares practical, Christ-centered advice on how to authentically love God and love your neighbor as a normal way of life. With a focus on the spiritual truths of patience, kindness, truth, and forgiveness, you will learn to make love your dominant life value” (Excerpt from Saddleback Resources).

Service Info for Jan. 29, 2023

Dear Friends,

How are we doing regarding our recovery project, whether it is spiritual or physical? Some of us may be doing well; some may be ups and downs; others may consider whether they would keep doing it. All the outcomes are understandable when we reflect on this spiritual marathon. This Sunday, we will continue exploring Nehemiah’s book and study the fourth part under the title “Opposition to the Rebuilding” in the series “Rebuild Our Broken Lives and Others.” I hope that the Word shared from the pulpit tomorrow may help us find God’s guidance over our continued renewal of the divine race.

With this note, I would like to invite you to join us in our hybrid worship service at St. Andrew’s Fenelon Falls on Sunday, January 29, 2023, at 10:00 am. This sacred assembly will also be broadcasted live. A virtual fellowship through Zoom will take place for those interested after the service. The Zoom link below will open at 9:45 am. Before the service, the announcement slides will be presented to the congregation at the sanctuary and on Zoom.

FYI 1: Rev. Ron Wallace will lead us in worship next Sunday, February 5, 2023. As Interim Moderator of Ballyduff Presbyterian Church, I will provide pulpit supply leadership there that Sunday.
FYI 2: As stated before, the First Annual Gathering as the Newly Amalgamated Church will be held right after the Feb. 12th service. Your presence in person or via Zoom and your prayers for this critical assembly are greatly appreciated!

“Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.” (Nehemiah 4:14).

Blessings,

Caleb
