Belonging

Where do you belong? In the 80’s there was the sitcom called Cheers that had the theme song that set up the rest of the show. In the theme song it had these lyrics

Sometimes you wanna go
Where everybody knows your name
And they’re always glad you came
You wanna be where you can see (ah-ah)
Our troubles are all the same (ah-ah)
You wanna be where everybody knows your name

This chorus is surrounded by verses talking about problems in life. It highlights the diversity of the cast of the show, but they all belong, they are all welcome, they are all important, they all have a place.

In 1 Peter 1:17-23 we see Peter reminding us that we are all foreigners in this trouble filled world, but we do have a place, and we do belong to Jesus. It is a reminder of Jesus’s words in John 14:1-4, that Jesus is going to prepare a place for us in His Father’s house. He is doing this because we belong with Him.  We do not belong to our problems or defined by our failing we belong to the one who has redeemed us and cares for us more than we realize or remember most days. We belong with Jesus.
